The Himalayan district of Taplejung witnessed a scorching heatwave, shattering a 58-year temperature record. According to the Water and Meteorology Field Office Taplejung, the capital Fungling, situated at a cool 1700 meters altitude, recorded a staggering 29 degrees Celsius last Saturday. This surpasses the previous record of 28.7 degrees Celsius set in 1966.
“Looking at the data since our office was established, this is the hottest May Taplejung has experienced in 58 years,” said David Dhakal, head of the office.
While light rain in the evening offered some relief to residents of Fungling, other areas in the district continued to swelter. The Mewakha police station in Pathibhara Yangwarak Rural Municipality reported a scorching 36 degrees Celsius at their meteorological station.
