After a six-year split, leaders of two Madhesh-based political parties are inching closer to reunification. Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) Chairman Mahantha Thakur and Janata Pragatisheel Party (JPP) Chairman Hridayesh Tripathi are engaged in discussions about a working unity, with a formal announcement possible within days.
“Talks about a working unity between the two parties are underway,” confirmed LSP Secretary Manish Mishra.
Tripathi left the LSP before the 2074 BS election following a disagreement within the then-unified Rastriya Janata Party (RJP). The RJP was formed by merging six Madhesh-focused parties, but Tripathi’s exclusion from a leadership role triggered his departure.
The potential reunification of the LSP and JPP marks a significant development in Madhesh politics. Tripathi notably won the 2074 BS election while aligned with the CPN-UML.
