The Royal & Ancient has announced that the 155th British Open will be played at St Andrews from July 11 to 18, 2027. Specifically, it will be the 31st time that the Old Course has hosted this event. The historic tournament, which was founded in 1860, will return to the birthplace of golf five years after its last visit. In 2022, the attendance record was broken, with 290,000 during the 150th edition, which crowned Cameron Smith. The Australian signed a spectacular final round of 64 strokes to lift the Claret Jug.

It is no coincidence that the Old Course has been chosen to be the venue in 2027. It will be 100 years since legendary amateur Bobby Jones won the Open at St Andrews (1927). He won the tournament by six strokes, allowing him to repeat his victory after winning the previous year at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Mark Darbon, chief executive of the R&A, who took up the role last month, expressed his excitement: “I am looking forward to the Open returning to St Andrews as much as the fans and players. There is something incredibly special about the Open being played at the Old Course, and many great champions have walked its fairways since it was first held here in 1873. St Andrews is the birthplace of golf and creates a unique atmosphere for fans and players.”

Many of the greatest names in golf history have lifted the famous ‘Claret Jug’ in this iconic location, including JH Taylor, James Braid, Bobby Jones, Peter Thomson, Bobby Locke, Jack Nicklaus, Severiano Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo or Tiger Woods.
