Mastodon, the free decentralized social network, will change ownership. The current CEO and founder of the platform, Eugen Rochko, has decided to transfer the leadership of the company to a non-profit organization. For those unfamiliar with this social network, Mastodon is a social media platform that allows users to share messages, images and videos, similar to X (formerly Twitter). What makes it special is that it is not managed by a single company or entity, but is made up of many different communities.

A decentralized social network means that, instead of being managed by a central server, it is distributed among multiple independent servers, also known as “instances” or “nodes.” Each instance can be managed by different people or organizations, allowing for greater control and customization.

“Mastodon was founded on the principles that people should be able to control their social circle on the Internet, organize their own timeline, and freely meet with the community of their choice,” explains the company’s official statement. “When our founder, Eugen Rochko, started working on Mastodon, he focused on creating the code and conditions for the type of social network he envisioned. The legal setup was a means to an end, a quick solution that would allow it to continue operating. At first, this approach was efficient and expeditious, but over time it became clear that Mastodon’s structures needed to evolve as the community grew.”

The statement ensures that in the next six months the transformation of Mastodon’s internal structures will take place, which will cease to be owned by a single person and will enshrine the planned independence in a European non-profit entity. The company promises that this change of power will in no way compromise its mission of creating a free, open and secure social network for its users.
