The Englishman Tyrrell Hatton won his eighth European DP World Tour title this Sunday by winning the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, in the United Arab Emirates, after a remarkable last round in which he beat the New Zealander Daniel Hillier by just one stroke.
Hatton, teammate of the Spanish Jon Rahm, the Legion XIII, on the LIV circuit sponsored by the sovereign fund of Saudi Arabia, completed the fourth day with a card of 69 strokes, for a total of 273.
At 33 years old, the English golfer, 17th in the world, added his eighth trophy on the European circuit, after his last triumph last October at the Alfred Dunhill Links Champinship (Scotland), to which he added one on the PGA Tour (2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational) and another at the LIV.
Hatton started the last day with one stroke behind Hillier, 223rd in the world, who withstood the pressure, although he gave in at the end and closed the last round with 71 strokes (274 in total). In third place was fellow Englishman Laurie Canter, who scored a 68, two behind the champion.
The Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, number three in the world and winner of four editions of the ‘Desert Classic, including the last two, had an outstanding performance in the last round, with 66 strokes, but the disadvantage with which he started (seven touches more than the leader) made it difficult for him to come back and finally he was three behind Hatton.
The first Spaniard was Iván Cantero, with -3 in the classification (285 hits), while Nacho Elvira and Alfredo García-Heredia made four more. Jon Rahm did not make the cut after the first two days.
