India: Legendary Indian fashion designer Rohit Bal, known for his groundbreaking style and influence on Indian fashion, has passed away at the age of 63. Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda,” had recently been hospitalized twice due to health concerns. Last week, he was admitted to the ICU but was later discharged, only to return to Aashlok Hospital in Delhi on Wednesday. He suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away on Friday.
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) honored Bal’s memory in a heartfelt post, recognizing his pioneering impact on Indian fashion. “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, his work redefined Indian fashion and inspired generations. His legacy will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace GUDDA,” read the statement.
Sunil Sethi, FDCI President, confirmed that Bal’s cremation will take place on Saturday. He expressed his deep sorrow at the designer’s passing, saying, “Rohit was a legend, and we are completely shaken right now.”
Born in Srinagar, Bal began his career in 1986, rising to become one of the most celebrated figures in Indian fashion. Known for his rich, intricate designs, he received numerous awards throughout his career, including the ‘Designer of the Year’ award in 2006 and the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Award in 2001. His grand finale at the Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI this October marked his latest comeback, showcasing his stunning collection, “Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe,” with actress Ananya Panday as the showstopper.
Bal’s work beautifully merged traditional Indian motifs with modern aesthetics, leaving an indelible mark on the industry and shaping the next generation of designers. His loss is felt deeply across India’s fashion community, and his legacy will continue to inspire the fashion world for years to come.
