Windows is a fairly important platform if we talk about operating systems, after all it has remained the most used by being added to basically every computer that customers buy in packages, whether laptops or even pre-assembled desktops. However, there are details that Microsoft has missed, and now a certain feature is finally being added by popular demand.
An update has been introduced in Windows 11 that marks a significant advancement in search functionality. This AI-powered enhancement makes it possible to find files, settings, and more using associated words and phrases, without needing to enter exact terms. Which can help a lot in the type of meta data of the file.
The new search uses AI models and semantic indexing, which improves accuracy when interpreting the context and meaning of queries. For example, searches like “bridge at sunset” or “trip quote” will identify relevant files based on their content, even if the names or metadata do not contain those words. It also extends to system settings, with descriptive commands like “change my theme.”
The functionality is available in key interfaces such as File Explorer, the taskbar search box, and the Settings app. For now, it’s limited to local files in indexed locations configured in Privacy & Security > Searching in Windows, but cloud storage such as OneDrive and Google Drive are planned to be integrated in future updates. So we will have to keep an eye out for more patches.
It should be noted that this feature, which supports popular formats such as .pdf, .docx and .jpg, is limited to the new Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon chips and their dedicated Neural Processing Units (NPUs), required to run semantic indexing. Despite everything, Microsoft continues to make progress in making Windows 11 a more intuitive and efficient platform, and in a few months users of version 10 will be forced to move to the current one.
